Don’t Forget the Garage: Move-Out Cleaning for GTA Homeowners

Garages are one of the most overlooked spaces during a house move-out in the GTA. Here's what to clean before you hand over the keys.

The garage is often the last space packed and the first one forgotten when it comes to move-out cleaning. For houses across Toronto and the GTA, an uncleaned garage can leave a poor final impression on a landlord, buyer, or new tenant — even if the rest of the house looks spotless.

Common Garage Issues at Move-Out

  • Oil stains and vehicle fluid residue on the concrete floor, which need a degreaser rather than a standard mop
  • Dust and cobwebs accumulated in corners, along rafters, and around stored items
  • Leftover paint cans, tools, or debris left behind after packing
  • Salt and grime tracked in from winter months, especially near the garage door entrance

Cleaning the Garage Floor Properly

  • Sweep thoroughly first to remove loose debris before any wet cleaning
  • Use a concrete-safe degreaser on oil or fluid stains, letting it sit before scrubbing
  • Rinse and allow to fully dry, since a damp garage floor can develop mildew if closed up before drying

Other Areas to Check

  • Garage door tracks and sensors, which collect dust and can affect door function if neglected
  • Shelving or built-in storage, wiped down and cleared of any leftover items
  • Light fixtures and any garage door opener remotes that need to be left behind per your lease or sale agreement

Why This Matters for Deposits and Sales

For renters, an uncleaned garage can be flagged during a landlord’s move-out inspection just like any interior room. For sellers, buyers increasingly walk through garages during final inspections, especially if it’s being used as functional storage or workspace rather than just parking.

My Canada Cleaning includes garage cleaning as part of full house move-out packages across Toronto and the GTA — an easy space to overlook, but not one we skip.
