A Homeowner’s Guide to Removing Common Stains and Odours from a Mattress

Dealing with an unsightly yellow stain or a persistent odour on your expensive mattress? Our guide provides step-by-step DIY instructions for tackling common stains like sweat and urine, and explains when it's time to call a professional for a truly hygienic clean.

A mattress is a significant investment in your comfort and health, but accidents and daily use can lead to unsightly stains and unpleasant odours. While some surface issues can be tackled at home, it’s crucial to use the right methods to avoid damaging the mattress foam and fabric.

The Golden Rules of Mattress Stain Removal

  1. Act Fast: Address stains as soon as you notice them.
  2. Blot, Never Rub: Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the mattress.
  3. Use Cold Water: Hot water can set protein-based stains like blood or urine.
  4. Less is More: Use as little cleaning solution and water as possible to prevent over-saturating the mattress, which can lead to mould.

How to Tackle Common Mattress Stains

1. Yellow Stains (Sweat and Body Oils) These are the most common stains.

  • Solution: Create a paste of baking soda, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, and a drop of clear dish soap.
  • Method: Gently apply the paste to the stain and let it sit until it’s completely dry. Scrape or vacuum off the dried residue. For stubborn stains, lightly spray with a 50/50 vinegar and water solution and blot dry.

2. Urine Stains (Pets or Children) The key here is to neutralize the odour-causing uric acid.

  • Solution: A 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water, followed by baking soda.
  • Method: Blot the fresh stain thoroughly. Lightly spray the area with the vinegar solution and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Blot again. Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the area, let it sit for several hours to absorb moisture and odour, then vacuum it up thoroughly.

3. Blood Stains

  • Solution: A paste of baking soda and cold water, or a meat tenderizer (the enzymes break down the proteins).
  • Method: Apply the paste to the stain, let it sit for 30 minutes, then blot it off with a cloth dampened with cold water.

When DIY Isn’t Enough: The Limits of Spot Cleaning

Spot cleaning can help with appearance, but it cannot remove the bacteria, allergens, and dust mites that have penetrated deep into the mattress. Furthermore, DIY methods can’t eliminate the source of deep-set odours.

Professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning) is the only way to flush out these deep contaminants, sanitize the mattress, and safely remove stubborn stains without risking damage.
